Hail and Wind Damage, Handled Calmly

Colorado's damaging hail season runs from mid-April to mid-September, says the state's emergency management office, and Colorado ranks second in the nation for hail claims. Storms are common here, but one storm doesn't mean your roof is ruined. An inspection tells you where you stand.

Big storms do reach this corner of the state. NOAA's records show the May 8, 2017 Front Range hailstorm hit several counties, Larimer and Weld among them. Most storms are far smaller, and a calm look beats a rushed decision.

The Usual Scenarios

  • Bruised shingles. Hail can knock granules loose or crack the mat underneath, which is hard to see from the ground.
  • Wind lift. Gusts can peel back tabs or tear shingles off along edges and ridges.
  • Dented gutters and vents. Soft metal often shows hail marks first, so photograph it.
  • A new leak after a storm. A ceiling stain that shows up days later is a reason to call soon.

Storm Damage Roof Price Ranges

Paying yourself, or just want context for a claim? These published figures are a starting point. The Fort Collins row is from 2024, so it may run low today.

If the work covers half the roof or more, City code calls for Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, so expect them in the quote.

Step by Step

  1. Stay safe. Keep off the roof and away from downed lines or limbs.
  2. Take dated photos. Get dented gutters, vents and siding.
  3. Request a free inspection. Call (970) 555-0153 and we'll connect you with a local roofer.
  4. Get it documented. The roofer photographs and measures the damage and writes up a price.
  5. Decide on a claim. You choose whether to file, and you deal with your insurer and its adjuster.
  6. Sign only a full contract. Once the scope is settled, the roofer pulls the permit and books the work.

How This Service Helps

After a big storm, strangers often knock on doors. This site does no roofing work. It connects you with an independent local roofer who holds the Fort Collins license, which you can confirm with City Contractor Licensing at 970-224-6165.

  • Damage on paper. Photos, measurements and a written price give you something solid to bring to your insurer.
  • A sturdier roof next time. If you replace, an impact-rated roof may earn a discount from your insurer. Ask yours.

The Claim Process in Plain English

Your roofer's part is to document and price the damage. The claim itself sits between you and your insurer. Colorado law also bars a roofer from acting as your public adjuster, though under a signed contract it may discuss the repair scope with your insurer.

For insurance-paid roofs, Colorado requires a written contract signed before work starts. It must list the scope, materials, rough dates and costs, the roofer's insurers and your right to cancel. Any money you pay is held in trust until materials arrive or most of the work is done.

  • An offer to cover your deductible. Colorado law bars a roofer from advertising or promising to pay, waive or rebate any part of it. Your insurer may then ignore that roofer's estimate.
  • Pressure to sign before anyone inspects. A legitimate roofer looks first and puts it in writing.
  • Letting the 72 hours slip. After a written denial, your window to cancel is short. See the first question below.

Good to Know

How does the 72-hour cancel right work?

If your insurer denies the roofing claim in whole or in part, you have 72 hours after its written notice to cancel. Send your notice in writing by email, mail or hand delivery. The roofer returns your payments within 10 days but may keep pay for work already done. It doesn't cover a later supplemental claim for damage nobody could foresee.

Can a roofer pay my deductible if I sign today?

No. Colorado law bars a roofer from advertising or promising to pay, waive or rebate any part of your deductible. If one offers, your insurer may disregard that roofer's estimate. Treat it as a reason to walk away.

Does every hailstorm damage a roof?

No. Small hail often leaves shingles intact, and damage can vary from one street to the next. A free inspection shows whether there's anything worth a claim before you call your insurer.

Is there state money for a hail-resistant roof?

Not yet. Colorado's Strengthen Colorado Homes program (SB26-155) is being set up in the Division of Insurance. Grants are expected no earlier than 2027, and no amount is set.
